Job Overview:

The Tennessee Department of Health is seeking a Director for the Tennessee Controlled Substance Monitoring Database (CSMD). This executive service position reports directly to the Executive Director of the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy.


Key Responsibilities:

Specific duties and responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to):

The Director is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of the Controlled Substance Monitoring Database. This oversight includes management of CSMD staff, working with the CSMD Committee, and ensuring the accuracy and security of CSMD data. Specific duties include but are not limited to, working with stakeholders to develop reports that are informative and useful to lower risk of abuse, overdose, and diversion, utilize proactive analysis of the database to improve user experience and monitor vendor performance, work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure proper protocols are in place to access CSMD data, and to help identify risk factors that may lead to prescription overdoses while working collaboratively with other departments.


The Director will work closely with the Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Director, the Office of General Counsel, the Office of Informatics and Analytics, the CSMD Committee, and the Executive Director of the Board of Pharmacy while ensuring compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and rules.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Required to be a pharmacist for at least 2 years, licensed in Tennessee
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, demonstrated leadership, and excellent interpersonal skills
  • The ability to exercise sound judgment in developing and interpreting departmental guidelines and policies
  • Experience with hardware and software challenges
